Lert Phan ("superior varieties") Farm was established in the Chiang Mai valley of northern Thailand in 1984. That year 24-year-old Simon Jan de Hoop, a freshly minted graduate student in plant breeding from Wageningen, joined the team. Now East-West had two Simons. Simon Jan was nicknamed "Simon Two." In 1986 a modest office, processing plant and trial farm was set up in rural Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi, northwest of Bangkok. Dr. Chantravipha Dhanasobhon was the first general manager followed in 1989 by Dhanate Runcharoen. As the first big breeding successes began to roll in, enthusiastic farmers welcomed hybrid bitter gourd in Thailand and improved red onion in the Philippines. Seed could not be produced fast enough. This was not unlike the reaction of vegetable farmers anywhere in the world once they realize the gold mine hidden in a new high-yielding variety.bbs.fobshanghai.com4Z*d0K)v1F$v%r
