Hungary sees food and agriculture as new growth areas to enhance trade and investment with China who it counts as a strategic economic partner, a senior Hungarian official said yesterday in Shanghai.
“There is huge potential to cooperate in food processing and agriculture,” Peter Szijjarto, Hungary’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations, told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview.
He pointed to the demand in China for non-genetically modified food as one example of the potential.
Hungary has maintained good business relations with China, said Szijjarto, who is also responsible for coordinating Hungarian-Chinese relationship. Hungarian exports, especially of machinery, to China have continued to expand in the past few years.
Last year, China ranked the fifth-biggest foreign investor in Hungary, with most of the investment in the information technology, electronics and chemical industries. Wanhua Industrial Group, Huawei Technologies, ZTE and the Bank of China are among the big Chinese investors in Hungary.
Szijjarto also called for more cooperation and fairness in addressing rising trade disputes between the European union and China.
