South Africa's manufacturing sector shed 59,000 jobs in the second quarter of this year, according to data released on Wednesday.
In the previous quarter, manufacturing employment shrank by 4.4 percent, and between September 2006 and March 2014, a total number of 188,000 South Africans employed in the manufacturing sector lost their jobs, the manufacturing sector advocacy group, Manufacturing Circle, said in a report.
This followed the release of economic data by Statistics South Africa on Tuesday, indicating that the country's manufacturing industry shrank by -0.3 percentage point in the second quarter of this year.
Since 2008, the industry has shed a total of 250,000 jobs C a sure indication that this traditionally labor intensive industry is failing to generate jobs for millions of South Africans, according to Manufacturing Circle which represents 36 major industry players within the manufacturing sector.
Confidence in the sector is also on the decline. A survey conducted by the organization reveals that only two percent of respondents perceived the manufacturing sector to be in good condition. This is a drastic decline from the 12 percent recorded amongst companies the same time last year.
Causes for the industry's failure included the government's confused approach to the National Development Plan, unstable labor relations and weak investor confidence driven by the government's inaction, the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) said in response to the report.
"With the right kinds of intervention, the DA believes that the inclusive economic growth can be achieved," the party said in a statement.
The DA proposed a series of measures to turn the sector and economy around, including political leadership, trade promotion, infrastructure investment, and cutting red tapes.
