South Africa: Court Grants EFF Interim Relief

23 DECEMBER 2014    From: http://allafrica.com

Cape Town — The Western Cape High Court on Tuesday lifted the sanctions imposed on the 20 EFF MPs suspended from Parliament.

Granting the urgent interdict sought by the Economic Freedom Fighters, Judge Dennis Davis ruled it would come into effect immediately.

"Pending the outcome of application of part B, the applicants should be allowed to carry out their functions with all provisions as elected members of the National Assembly," he ruled.

Davis earlier said his judgment "cannot and does not provide a definitive finding regarding the applicants' conduct" on August 21 this year, when EFF members disrupted President Jacob Zuma's question time chanting "pay back the money".

The disruptions in the House on that day led to a disciplinary committee suspending them from Parliament without pay for, in some cases, up to 30 days.
