The engine of GLA sport SUV is a totally new 4-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharging. This transversely mounted engine is available in two displacement variants and three power ratings.

Design 
In the cylinder head cast from a high-strength aluminium alloy, the intake ducts were adapted to the redesigned combustion chambers. Their form creates a high degree of turbulence which further improves the combustion process. 

The four valves per cylinder are controlled via two continuously variable camshafts. Valve lift on the intake side is controlled by a mechanical system named CAMTRONIC (only DEH16LA). The system includes a carrier shaft with axially slideable cams and an electromagnetically operated lift solenoid with two plungers allowing forward and backward motion. A sensor also monitors the tappet positions.

Mixture formation 
Direct injection allows an increase in the compression ratio compared to the previous duct injection, which makes for higher efficiency. 

The fuel injection pressure attains a maximum of 200 bar. The high-pressure pump takes the form of a single-plunger pump with a pressure and flow control valve integrated into the pump module. The fuel is conveyed to the newly developed piezo-injectors centrally located in the combustion chamber by a high-pressure rail. The injectors are piezo-controlled valves arranged centrally in the combustion chamber.

CAMTRONIC ensures optimal cylinder charging under partial loads, reducing load cycle losses and lowering fuel consumption (1.6-litre variant). 

A newly developed engine control system is also employed. This fully torque-based system possesses interfaces with ESP®, transmission and air conditioning.

Environment 
A lower engine weight compared to other 4-cylinder petrol units in this segment, low friction levels, demand-controlled peripheral units and, in particular, the "low-end torque" configuration with a high torque at low engine speeds make a significant contribution to energy efficiency, as does the standard start/stop function
